Just to be clear, it’s me. I’m the stubborn bitch. I did everything in my power to not sit down in an upright position and meditate. I never saw it as important. My friends meditate constantly. I’ll be planning to hang out with them and get a “let me know when you’re here, but I’m doing a quick meditation” or they’ll have this big epiphany about their life during a meditation. I never wanted to take the time to do it.

Just over a month ago, I spoke to one of my spiritual advisors. She made an interesting comment about my energy. She said that it almost felt like my Kundalini energy started from the crown and moved down instead of the way people talk about experiencing the energy rising up from the spine to the crown. She used the words “reversed kundalini awakening”. I honestly didn’t think too much of it, and even as I worked with other people it didn’t come as anything to worry about or really investigate. I figured the answers would pop up when they did, or like most things, I’d investigate when the thought came up to do so. Well, I investigated, and as I read up on “reverse kundalini,” I cried bullshit.

I was 14 years old and just dipping my toes into the role I would play in my high school years, the gay kid. It was 1996 and Wilson Cruz’s role in the hit series “My So Called Life” had broken ground on finally making not only queer teens visible but latino queer teens as well. Before that, gay was a thing I would hear adults joke about or something my mom would warn me about.
